Laced through wetlands in the Spanish Springs valley 15 miles from downtown Reno, The Lakes Course helped kickstart Northern Nevada's second golf boom in the late 1990s and quickly started racking up "best of" awards from local and regional publications including FG. It's a mix of parkland and desert golf that brings plenty of variety into play — water, stout bunkering, tall grass, even a mature tree here and there — and shows Trent Jones Jr. at his cagey best. The short par 4s demand careful consideration before pulling driver, while every par 5 is reachable in two if the wind is calm. But it's at No. 17, a scary-sweet 220-yard carry over water, where Trent shows his best stuff. Make birdie there and you'll remember it forever.
