As if old man Jones' original course wasn't spectacular enough — hanging on a mountainside with sweeping views of Lake Tahoe on several holes and well-forested goodness all around — the Incline General Improvement District, which owns and operates both this and the executive-length Mountain Course, had to go and make it even better. In 2003-’04 they brought in Granite Bay, Calif.-based architect Kyle Phillips (known for Kingsbarns in Scotland) to completely update the course with new bunkering, greens and tees. The result is a true mountain masterpiece with tight landing areas, well-bunkered greens and water hazards on most holes, including a stream that shows up just where it should to keep players engaged and honest. Tahoe itself doesn't come into play, except as exquisite eye candy. What else matters?
