It's as far west as a Texas course can possibly be, which puts it right in FG's wheelhouse — and on the short list of courses anybody passing through El Paso International Airport (located just a couple of par 5s away) should check out, and soon. In fact, with the world-class Fazio touch in evidence at every turn in this links-in-the-desert setting, Butterfield Trail is worth a layover, and even a special trip. Shaggy freeform bunkering, oversized greens built for vaunted West Texas winds, fairways that dip down into the sandy soil like the best seaside stretches of Bandon Dunes — it's all here, and it's open to the public forever. The occasional water feature shows up to stirring effect, adding yet another strategic layer to your round. There's lots of fascinating history to soak up as well, not to mention good food in the clubhouse restaurant, which adds up to one goal: Making a run for the border, Butterfield style.
